CHAPTER THIRTEEN
THREE DAYS LATER, Trina completed plans for a party hosted by Bellagio at the national shoe convention. She kept eyeing the clock because Walker had said he wanted to meet with her, about business, heâd emphasized, at the end of the day.
Walker strode through the door just after four-thirty. âSorry this is so late. I spent the afternoon upstairs with marketing. Theyâre getting nervous about the product, since Sal has decided not to return full-time. Jennyâs in demand.â
âI know,â Trina said. âYou wouldnât believe how many requests for her appearance we get. And what she really wants to do is lock herself in a room and draw.â
âLetâs do some brainstorming,â he said.
âIâd like to be in on this,â Dora said, giving Walker a covetous look.
âIt will be work,â Trina warned.
âI know,â Dora said with a huffy sound in her voice.
Trina said. âOkay, I need to grab Maddie. Iâll just bring her back here.â
âDuring our meeting?â Dora asked in horror.
âItâs called multitasking. Iâll load her up on Cheerios. Back in a few,â she said, wondering if Dora would have Walkerâs clothes off by the time she returned.
Not her worry, she told herself as she walked toward the nursery. âGo for it, Dora,â she muttered under her breath. Maybe if someone else took care of Walkerâs sexual needs, Trina wouldnât feel so aware of him as a man, a very hot man.
Scowling at herself, she pushed the thought from her mind and picked up Maddie, who didnât need an immediate diaper change and appeared to be in a good mood.
Returning to the office, she found Walker talking on his cell phone and Dora looking at him in disgust.
Walker gave Trina a quick nod. âIâll check back with you tomorrow. Thanks,â he said. âNew account,â he explained and glanced at Maddie for several seconds.
Seeming to tear his gaze away, he looked at Trina. âAny ideas?â
âThey need to hire more designers,â Trina said, sitting down and digging a bag of Cheerios out of one of her desk drawers. She spread a blanket on the floor beside her, set Maddie down and put some Cheerios on a napkin. âBut thatâs not going to take care of things immediately. Jenny has been great for us, but sheâs got her hands full and marketing wants to make a big move into womenâs active shoes. Totally new market for us.â
âWe should get some celebrities to wear our shoes,â Dora said.
âGood point,â Trina said, smiling at Maddie as she picked up one Cheerio at a time and ate it. âI have a list of celebrities and their shoe sizes. We can send out samples. Donate to charity. The challenge is making these shoes seem more glamorous to wear. Tennis shoes can be cute and fun, but not that glamorous.â
âWeâre working on that with the ad campaign,â Walker said.
âWeâre targeting the working woman at the end of the day. Itâs more about comfort than spiked heels.â
âYeah, hausfrau types and mothers like you,â Dora added, looking at Walker for approval.
He shot her a quick quizzical glance.
