CHAPTER THIRTEEN

THREE DAYS LATER, Trina completed plans for a party hosted by Bellagio at the national shoe convention. She kept eyeing the clock because Walker had said he wanted to meet with her, about business, he’d emphasized, at the end of the day.

Walker strode through the door just after four-thirty. “Sorry this is so late. I spent the afternoon upstairs with marketing. They’re getting nervous about the product, since Sal has decided not to return full-time. Jenny’s in demand.”

“I know,” Trina said. “You wouldn’t believe how many requests for her appearance we get. And what she really wants to do is lock herself in a room and draw.”

“Let’s do some brainstorming,” he said.

“I’d like to be in on this,” Dora said, giving Walker a covetous look.

“It will be work,” Trina warned.

“I know,” Dora said with a huffy sound in her voice.

Trina said. “Okay, I need to grab Maddie. I’ll just bring her back here.”

“During our meeting?” Dora asked in horror.

“It’s called multitasking. I’ll load her up on Cheerios. Back in a few,” she said, wondering if Dora would have Walker’s clothes off by the time she returned.

Not her worry, she told herself as she walked toward the nursery. “Go for it, Dora,” she muttered under her breath. Maybe if someone else took care of Walker’s sexual needs, Trina wouldn’t feel so aware of him as a man, a very hot man.

Scowling at herself, she pushed the thought from her mind and picked up Maddie, who didn’t need an immediate diaper change and appeared to be in a good mood.

Returning to the office, she found Walker talking on his cell phone and Dora looking at him in disgust.

Walker gave Trina a quick nod. “I’ll check back with you tomorrow. Thanks,” he said. “New account,” he explained and glanced at Maddie for several seconds.

Seeming to tear his gaze away, he looked at Trina. “Any ideas?”

“They need to hire more designers,” Trina said, sitting down and digging a bag of Cheerios out of one of her desk drawers. She spread a blanket on the floor beside her, set Maddie down and put some Cheerios on a napkin. “But that’s not going to take care of things immediately. Jenny has been great for us, but she’s got her hands full and marketing wants to make a big move into women’s active shoes. Totally new market for us.”

“We should get some celebrities to wear our shoes,” Dora said.

“Good point,” Trina said, smiling at Maddie as she picked up one Cheerio at a time and ate it. “I have a list of celebrities and their shoe sizes. We can send out samples. Donate to charity. The challenge is making these shoes seem more glamorous to wear. Tennis shoes can be cute and fun, but not that glamorous.”

“We’re working on that with the ad campaign,” Walker said.

“We’re targeting the working woman at the end of the day. It’s more about comfort than spiked heels.”

“Yeah, hausfrau types and mothers like you,” Dora added, looking at Walker for approval.

He shot her a quick quizzical glance.
